Blog EntryLet's have a DRY Songkran~!!!!Mar 30, '08 4:51 AM
for everyone
What do you think about my brilliant idea of a DRY Songkran?

Y'all gonna hate me and my new idea FO SHO.

It all came to me when I just realized that it’s actually Earth Hour when I turned on the TV (ironic, isn’t it?) and saw that many cities went dark for an hour by choice to commemorate the coming Earth Day.

(I was actually in Emporium for the MIDNIGHT SALE: buying more “stuff”, using up the aircon and those evil paper (and yes, also plastic) bags, PLUS enjoying the bands on stage – basically being very environmentally UN-friendly).

Even Google went black.

All the nonsense hype isn’t lost to me:

1). I actually had to turn on CNN to find out about the event.

2). In some cities, there were huuuuge electronic boards counting down 3, 2, 1 to Earth Hour.

3). How does a black Google page help the Earth? You can say that Google was supporting Earth Hour “in spirit” and trying to “raise awareness blah blah”…. But the only time someone was gonna see that Google had gone black was when that someone was on the internet – using electricity through the computer and giving off more heat. HAH~!!

So, in the spirit of more environmental nonsense, I am therefore suggesting that this year’s Songkran should be a DRY one (GASP~!! The horror~!!).

Before you sic Greenpeace (or the Tourism Authority of Thailand) on me, lemme explain:

During the 3-day Songkran event, the WHOLE COUNTRY of Thailand is gonna waste water like crazy in the spirit of “culture”. And not just the locals; millions of tourists are already (as we speak) flocking to the Kingdom for the sole purpose of wasting this precious natural resource. Oh and waitaminit… Thailand’s neighbors will ALSO celebrate Songkran by splashing H2O like mad~!!

Anybody heard of the “water crisis”? Here, you can read it at Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_crisis

It’s not an exaggeration when it’s said that future wars will be fought over water.

I am now proclaiming myself as the first sour-grapes volunteer:

Dear Mother Nature,

I swear to thee… I will NOT splash water during Songkran~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(OK, OK… so I DID go to Chiang Mai MANY TIMES during previous Songkrans and wasted water like there was no tomorrow… but that’s all in THE PAST`~!! I have been reformed~!!).

From now on, I will only use water for daily necessities, like:

- Taking showers (NOT baths~!!)

- Getting my hair treatments in unpopular salons (less customers means less water wasted, riiiight~??).

- Boiling mama noodles .

I'll totally cross to your side and be with you on this one. The original tradition of Songkran wasn't this wasteful and environment ignorant anyway, not to mention other annoyances. My one little vote goes for a DRY Songkran. Yay!

I will go with a dry Songkran but without substituting water for toilet cleaner. Things are nice and clean already out here in rural Thailand.

hahaha i actually have the same thought about earth hour, so ok you shut down your lights. and how does that actually help? we always do such a thing everyday and we call that, conserving energy/electricity.

i wish earth hour would be like.. tree planting all over the world or something like that. how about we call it earth week?

and with your concept about the dry songkran.. i'm not thai that's why i'd like it. help save mother earth. and i remember when i used to work in ADB, that's when i realized that there is really a water crisis.

Oh, you have still some options for improvement of resources savings. What do you think about boiling noodles first and then use the already hot water for hair washing? Maybe you can even save money for conditioner?
If you need more suggestions, let me know :)

I was on duty last night and wondered why we turned the lights off but broadcasted the event worldwide.

For Songkran, I didn't splash water for ages.

Over here the government's main concerns are mainly:

- road accidents due to drunk driving during the celebrations
- shameless hussies who go around (and get doused) while wearing see-through and skimpy tops - and thus besmirch the good name of proper Thai ladies nationwide

NO MENTION about wasting water at all...

That is PURE GENIUS~!!!! The protein from the noodles would do wonders for my tresses, I'm sure~!!

What about a new law telling people to flush their toilets only ONCE a day~???

ME TOO~!! I think I only played water three times, and always in Chiang Mai (coz Bangkok gets very quiet during Songkran)... but nowadays I don't splash water anymore...

Oh, I heard a rumor that there are toilets with a flushing water available. Seems you have such a device. You can use a simple pit (somewhere in the park..., shovel for rent) and put some chalk on the hardware to reduce the smell. This saves a lot of water.

*massages chin* Hmmmm... I guess the amount of grunt work increases as the amount of water used is decreased.

Of course, but it is naturally clean dirt.

BWAHAHAHA~~ your reaction is priceless~!!

Well, I've heard rumors that Hooters was gonna open in Phuket (Patong Beach, to be exact), but I dunno if they really went through with the idea... After all, like you said, the establishment will be hard-pressed to find enough female employees who will "measure up" to its "standards" hyuk hyuk~!!

Well... yes. That's why I'll be cooling myself with aircon (which is actually another environmentally-unfriendly method HA HA HA)...

I shall be buying a water pistol (in fact I am gonna get one of those high velocity pump action ones) but only to shoot at the cats that have decided that the Marginata in my front garden is a good toilet.

BWAHAHAAAA... Won't you be losing out on some good natural ('organic'~!!) fertilizer, though~??

Yes, m'am... It's the Thai New Year when people throw water for three days. You can get more info from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_New_Year
(this entry only mentions road accidents as the "disadvantage" of Songkran though... no mention of water being wasted at all).
