One particular GHASTLY thunderstorm turned Sukhumvit 39 and 49 into one friggin' LAKE.
I was lucky I was inside a van, so I managed to keep my feet (and everything else~!!) dry.
Others who weren't so fortunate had to wade in water that reached up to the calf. Eeeeeeeuuuuw~~~ Who knows WHAT was in the murky liquid~?!
This restaurant deeper in Sukhumvit 39 was prepared... It actually had SAND BAGS~!! Wahahahaaaaa~~~!!!!
The thing is... considering that both Sukhumvit 39 and 49 are where a whole bunch of moneyed Japanese expats stay, I think it's just SCANDALOUS that the sois are left to gurgle and rot in so much H2O, when other parts of Sukhumvit drain better~!!
Look at this: This was Thonglo (Sukhumvit 55) a few hours after the thunderstorm stopped. The road was DRY~~!!!
OK, so the traffic was hellish, but hey, this is SUKHUMVIT~~!!!
Compare THAT with this VDO clip of Sukhumvit 39 which I recorded from the van... You'll see that the water actually reached until the pavement~!! There were actually W~A~V~E~S on this Sukhumvit lake~~~!!!!*squeaaaaaaal*
Crazy weather these days.... The old drainage system can't handle sudden downpours, same at our place (& Buddha knows where else in Bangkok). By the way, I think everybody deserves better, not just Japanese expats :)
It has been raining tremendously here also, in fact for about 6 days straight. I live in Suburbia and drainage is real good. In fact a stream is the boundary between my place and the neighboring plots. We are damn fortunate here in Western Pennsylvania with the hills creating good drainage. I seen the worst in Louisiana with flat asphalt covered neighborhoods. I feel for all of Sukhumvit and Acer in the Philippines.
I remember one time in college when in the middle of the sessions, classes were suspended due to heavy rain...heavy rain not typhoon. the flood reached thigh high and we were all stuck there. no choice but to walk through the yucky water to find a way to go home unfortunately there's no other way but to stay there until morning. Luckily the campus admin provided food for everyone.
OMG.....i remember the flood. Did you know that Kelapa Gading being Lake for seven days? And My house fill with water my knee high. I hate flood....but I never hate rain.

Heh heh YEA I agree~~!!! It's just I think the Japanese are getting creamed coz their real estate agents them that the reason their apartments are expensive is becoz they're located in 'hi-so' areas... They just conveniently forget to mention that these are also potential 'hi-so' LAKES~~!!! Fu.. fu.. fu...
calf deep?? that's not even considered "flood" in my place.
Normally on normal rain, the flood will reach your knees our town.
On typhoon signal #2, it'll reach your waist...
On typhoon signal #3, it'll reach your chest..
and the worst part of it, the water will last for more than a week. :P
I rest my case. True, floods in Sukhumvit can never compete with floods in the Philippines~!!! You guys get really fierce TYPHOONS, while we here just have to bear with MONSOON RAINS.
Is it true that the University of Santo Thomas (UST) has metal bars attached to its walls so people wouldn't get carried away by the floods which could get reach waist/chest height~?!

The weird thing is, only SOME Sukhumvit sois get reeeeally flooded (like 39 and 49, and some parts of 24); others don't (like Sukhumvit 26 and 55)... It's like each soi has its own drainage system, but we're all living on the SAME ROAD~!!

HAHAHAHAAAAA~~~!! I've heard from my Filipino friends that in times like these, EVERYONE listens to the radio for the words "signal number 5" - that means everything shuts down = schools are canceled~~!!! WOO-HOOOO~~~!!!!

How about you? Where do you live? Are you OK?
Don't worry, I've kept myself fine and dry :D
I realize now that Sukhumvit floods are NOTHING compared to what you guys have to endure~!!! Heeeeeeeee...
now i'm trying to imagine your facial expression after seeing those floods.. haha!
Well, the van driver sitting next to me said my eyes were so huge like saucers~~!!! Hee hee hee... It was kinda funny coz he was sooooo... cool and calm and patient... Actually, everybody on the road were just taking everything in their stride. Heh heh~!!

I studied in UST. hahahha!(have a clear picture now of my flood experience) i haven't heard about the metal bars..all I know is the the Main Building (which is the oldest building that looks like a church) has this certain structure to prevent the building to collapse when there's an earthquake.

UST students are good flood "swimmers"...should there be an olympic for that, we will surely get all the gold medals.

So there are NO metal bars~?!?! Shucks... I am actually kinda disappointed... Someone told me that UST has these metal bars on the wall so people can grab onto them while wading in the deep water, with their shoes held high in their hands~~!!!
For a long time, I've been imagining what THAT must be like~!! Now you've just shattered that illusion.... Heeeeeeeeeeee...

oh!sorry for that..weheheh..when did you learn about that metal bars.coz UST has been renovated after I graduated in 2001...
"They just conveniently forget to mention that these are also potential 'hi-so' LAKES~~!!! Fu.. fu.. fu..." A case of poetic justice? Please do the same for all other Hi-So places!

It happens in Ladphrao too. I'm lucky my soi doesn't get flooded.

Karma, yea~?? But that would mean that our Filipino and Indonesian neighbors have MUCH worse karma, then~??

Maybe some sois' sewers are blocked by rats/cockroaches or even garbage~?? I also think some sois are lower, so naturally they're the ones who get flooded first whenever there's heavy rain... It's AGAIN raining cats and dogs as I'm typing this, by the way~!!!
You mean you haven't any recollection of how Sukhumvit submerges each year?
I am right smack bang on the river and I noticed it was a bit low this afternoon. Never mind eh?
Considering that Sukhumvit goes aaaaaaaaaaaall the way to the Thai-Cambodian border, I'm sure SOME parts of it gets really tragic... But nope... Not in MY part of Sukhumvit, la~!!
lucky me.. no floods in Baan Nork like Lad Lum Kaeo.. hahahahaha :P
Well, it's over midnight now and I just came back from HOBS (the place is becoming a regular hang-out place for me and my friends HA HA HA)... There was still a slight drizzle, but nothing like the squall Sukhumvit had this afternoon around 6 pm~!!
And the best part was... tonight turned out to be LADIES' NIGHT~!!! I got a free glass of white wine~~!!!!!! Yippy yippy yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay~~~~~~~~~~~~~!!!!!
And the answer is, ***ratatatataaaattaaa**** You need to find a new house again Cap...... Hahahahahaha
Kin kao reyang, krap?
Im laew, kha~!!! Wan nii kin "mentaiko gohan" thii raan aharn Yippun chuu "Yamagoya Ramen", laew ko pai kin lau thii "HOBS". Kin "fish n' chips" kap "pork chops" duay~~!!!! Aroi maak maak na khaaaaaa~~~ : P

Hmmm, it's being shown in theaters... I highly recommend this movie; it's about what nasty things can happen when nature finally gets sick and tired of us humans~!!
